Our ARP

Disraeli School has an 18 place ARP (Additionally Resourced Provision) for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder and an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP).  Our ARP aims to support the development of the children by providing specialist support within a mainstream school.

We support children through specialist teaching, ASD intervention e.g. PECS and TEACCH, small group interventions, individualised learning and access to flexible teaching arrangements.

Our ARP aims to support children in joining a mainstream class and inclusion with peers.  Our ARP is not a standalone classroom but is a “base” within the school to support the children with ASD. The ARP consists of 2 rooms.  Our KS1 room has a toilet and small sensory room.  Both classrooms lead onto our outside courtyard where children have access to various play, learning and sensory equipment. Children are registered in the ARP and have a visual timetable that shows them which of the lessons they integrate into mainstream for and which lessons are based in the ARP.

 Our ARP Classes and Teachers

The ARP has 2 teachers and a team of Learning Support Assistants (LSAs).

Mrs Swallow – ARP Manager and KS2 Teacher

Mrs Harding – FS2/KS1 teacher.

Members of the team regularly attend training to keep up to date with ASD practices.  This has included TEACCH, Team Teach, Makaton and Rainbow Road workshops most recently.

Dolphin Class (FS2/KS1):

Each morning the children are met at the door at 8.35 am and come straight to Dolphin class.  Some children arrive by taxi so they will be met by an LSA who then walks with them to class.  Once in class each child will have 3 basket activities to complete, following the TEACCH principles, requiring differing levels of independence.  We then sit together to take the register and go through any changes to the day and any news.  At 9am it is time to go to our mainstream classrooms with our LSA’s.  The amount of time spent in the mainstream class is determined by each child’s individual needs.

The children return to Dolphin classroom throughout the day to take part in intervention groups and complete 1 to 1 adult supported activities.  Our groups currently include Rainbow Road (OT), Funky Monkeys (music and movement), Social group and Vocabulary group (SaLT).

At the end of the day children return to the ARP for a story and finish their day at 3.05 pm.

Puffa Fish Class (KS2):

Each morning the children are met at the door at 8.35 am and come straight to Puffa Fish class.  Some children arrive by taxi so they will be met by an LSA who then walks them in and directs them to class.  Once in class each child will have 3 basket activities to complete, following the TEACCH principles, requiring differing levels of independence.  We then sit together to take the register and go through any changes to the day and any news.  At 9am it is time to go to our mainstream classrooms with our LSA’s.  The amount of time spent in the mainstream class is determined by each child’s individual need.

The children return to Puffa Fish classroom throughout the day to take part in intervention groups and complete 1 to 1 activities.  Our groups currently include Rainbow Road (OT) and Social group (SaLT).

At the end of the day children return to gather their books etc to take home and leave from here for taxis, collection or to take part in an after school club.

 Keeping parents informed

Home/School book - Each day the ARP teachers and LSA’s comment on the lessons that your child takes part in.  We inform parents how the child coped with the lesson, what went well and any issues that occurred or any activities that would be beneficial to practice at home.  Parents are encouraged to write in these books to inform us of any changes of routine, evening/weekend activities or any incidents that may affect their child’s learning throughout the following day.

Annual Reviews – These take place once a year but can be more often if deemed necessary.  SaLT, OT and ARP teachers join the parents to discuss the child’s progress during the year and together make any changes to the child’s EHC Plan and set new targets.  The appropriateness of the placement is considered annually at each Annual Review of the EHC plan.

Parent’s Evenings – These happen twice a year during the Autumn and Spring Terms.

SaLT – The SaLT’s are happy for parents to join them to observe a session and to discuss strategies and activities that may be practised at home.

Summer Tea Party – This is an opportunity to meet with the LSA’s, SaLT and teachers that work with your child.  It is a celebration of the year and a chance to meet with the new LSA’s that will be working with your child during the following year.

Trips

Trips and visits are hugely beneficial to the children in the ARP.  These have included visiting Odds Farm, Cliveden House and Tring Natural History Museum.  We also join our mainstream classes on their trips if they are appropriate.
