PE

Intent

To develop children’s interest in Sport and Physical Activity, understanding the health and social benefits they provide. Through high quality PE teaching children will systematically build up the skills and knowledge of different sports as well as the rules required to participate in sports and activities with increasing confidence. Children will learn how to work together and officiate their own games with a focus on fairness and sportsmanship.

Implementation

Facilitated through the Compete PE framework, children will follow carefully sequenced lessons to ensure skills, knowledge and vocabulary are built upon year on year, retrieving previous learning before building on this, through adaptive teaching, with new content. In partnership with specialist coaching company Sports 4 Kids, teachers will deliver the PE curriculum in line with the National Curriculum (2013) providing children with 2 hours of lesson time and/or physical activity (E.g. Mile Run).

In KS1, lessons focus on: mastering basic movements, including developing balance, agility and coordination across a range of activities; participating in team games, including tactics; and performing dances using movement patterns.

In KS2, lessons focus on: different movement skills (e.g. running, throwing and catching, jumping) in isolation and then in combination; playing competitive games (modified as appropriate through adaptive teaching); developing flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance; performing dances with a range of movement patterns; taking part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges, comparing their performances with previous ones and demonstrating improvement. Swimming and water safety is taught by specialist teachers at a local swimming pool across Year 4 and 5, with all children attending, as a minimum, weekly for one term in both Year 4 and Year 5.

Invite only extra-curricular clubs offer MAGT pupils an opportunity to develop their skills and to support children to increase their confidence and self-esteem. A wide range of sports clubs are open to all children through teacher led clubs and outside agencies. Whole school events (Santa Dash/Sports 4 Champions) raise the profile of PE and Sport and the importance of healthy living.

Junior Sports Leaders provide opportunities to increase physical activity for all children during break times and perseverance through challenges whilst developing their own leadership skills.

Impact

Children will understand the importance and benefits of physical activity and sport. After experiencing a range of intra and inter school competitions children will enjoy the competition of sport and the pride of representing a team. Due to the sequenced nature of teaching, children will possess the knowledge, skills and vocabulary to confidently play and officiate a wide range of sports that they may develop further in their personal lives when they leave The Disraeli School or at their next stage of learning at secondary school.

Swimming

Children go swimming in Years 4 and 5 as part of the PE curriculum. The children are taken by coach to Handy Cross Sports Centre, and, together with the Handy Cross swimming teachers, are taught to swim in line with the National Curriculum requirements.

Children should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres: (48% - 2023)
  • use a range of strokes effectively, for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke: (48% - 2023)
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations: (61% - 2023)
