RE

Intent

The aim of Religious Education at The Disraeli School is: to acquire and develop knowledge of different religions (both Abrahamic and Dharmic), with prominence given to Christianity; to celebrate diversity and build empathy and tolerance towards others and finally, to foster awareness and understanding of the way religion shapes people’s lives and behaviours in our school and wider society.

Religious Education at our school will enable our children to learn more about themselves and their place in the world from religion, whilst also learning about religion and worldviews which have influenced the lives of millions of people.

Implementation

The RE curriculum at The Disraeli School follows the Buckinghamshire Agreed Syllabus, written by the Buckinghamshire SACRE. Religious Education lessons explore the beliefs, values, practices and ways of living from the principal religions and different worldviews.

The units of work are carefully designed to ensure progression of children’s knowledge, skills and vocabulary. Relevant knowledge, skills and vocabulary are retrieved from previous learning before being built upon, through adapative teaching, with new content to ensure deep learning.

Religious Education units of work and lessons focus around an overarching enquiry question. Our children will first explore their own responses to the enquiry questions and consider their own experiences before considering the experiences, behaviours and attitudes of others.

Impact

Religious Education at The Disraeli School will develop our children’s knowledge of both Abrahamic and Dharmic religions as well as the skills of comparison, analysis, critical thinking and reflection as well as developing their skills of empathy. They will develop the tools to understand: how our behaviours and lives affect other people and the world we live in, how our behaviours and attitudes are influenced by our experiences and beliefs and reflect on their experiences of the world and the beliefs, values and attitudes that guide them through to their next stage of education and into wider life.

Right to withdraw

At The Disraeli School, our Religious Education curriculum plays an important role in preparing our pupils for life in a diverse and modern world. We aim to foster respect, empathy, and critical thinking by exploring the beliefs, practices, and traditions of major world religions and non-religious worldviews.
Our RE lessons are designed to be inclusive, balanced, and accessible to all students, regardless of their own faith or background.
We believe that RE is highly valuable for all pupils. However, we fully respect the rights of parents and carers regarding their child’s religious education. In accordance with Department for Education (DfE) guidelines, parents and carers have the legal right to choose to withdraw their child from all or part of RE lessons, as well as from acts of collective worship.
Please note the following key information regarding this right:
  • No Explanation Needed: You do not need to provide a reason or justification to the school if you wish to exercise your right to withdraw your child.
  • Flexible Options: You can choose to withdraw your child from the entire RE curriculum or only from specific topics or units of work.
  • Supervision and Safety: If a child is withdrawn, the school will ensure they are safely supervised in an alternative area of the school during RE lesson times.
  • Alternative Work: While the school is not legally required to provide alternative curriculum teaching or separate work during this time, parents are welcome to provide appropriate educational materials for their child to complete independently during these periods.
How to Request a Withdrawal
We always encourage parents and carers to look through our curriculum overview or speak with us before making a final decision. We are happy to discuss any specific concerns you might have or clarify what will be taught in upcoming lessons. If you are thinking of withdrawing your child or you would like to discuss our curriculum content, please contact us on office@disraeli.bucks.sch.uk. From here, we will arrange a face-to-face meeting to explore your concerns with you.
If you would like to proceed with a withdrawal, please follow these steps:
  1. Please submit your request in writing (via email or letter).
  2. Address your request directly to the Co-Headteachers, Miss Pikulski and Mrs Gowers, at office@disraeli.bucks.sch.uk.
  3. Clearly state whether you wish to withdraw your child from all RE lessons, specific topics, or collective worship.
