Computing

Intent

The pupils at The Disraeli School have the right to relevant, immersive and contagious learning within their Computing development. With technology playing such a pivotal role in the wider world, we believe that ‘Computational Thinking’ and a range of experiences is vital for our pupils and this forms the basis of our curriculum. At its core, Computing at Disraeli looks at Computer Science and provides our pupils with opportunities for children to explore systems, especially through programming. The Computing curriculum will develop children’s basic computing skills, such as touch typing, to ensure they are ready for secondary school and future life, and it will allow the children to use a range of software to develop the breadth and depth of learning. Disraeli’s computing curriculum will provide opportunities for the children to be able to work independently and develop resilience, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, which can be transferred to other areas of learning and their lives. Failures and ‘What if I…?’ ideas will be encouraged as part of learning.  A key element of the curriculum will allow the children to learn how to become both digitally literate and how to use digital devices safely and responsibly.

Implementation

Computing at The Disraeli School does not follow any singular scheme but its bespoke design and approach uses a range of software in order for children to maximise their progress. A long term plan with sequential development of knowledge, skills and vocabulary has been written to ensure that objectives are met across multiple schemes of work and year groups in a spiral curriculum, retrieving key knowledge, skills and vocabulary before building new content through adaptive teaching. All schemes of work are incorporated into the Cornerstone Framework to ensure further skills and knowledge are included. This curriculum is delivered in line with the Teaching and Learning policy, to ensure learning is continual, revisited and progressive.

Impact

Children will leave the Disraeli School having covered all of the National Curriculum requirements in depth, and will therefore confidently use technology, from basic knowledge and skills such as the use of mousepads and keyboard, to complex programming knowledge and skills.

Because of the curriculum delivery, they will have a growth mindset towards problem solving using digital devices.

Children will have an understanding of programming and writing algorithms, which will prepare them for future learning and life.

Children will know how to stay safe online and be able to explain what to do if they encounter cyberbullying or something else that makes them feel uncomfortable.

Children will be fully prepared for the next stage of their learning at secondary school as well as possessing the knowledge, skills and vocabulary required in their wider lives.
