Geography

Intent

The intent of Geography in our school is to inspire a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with the children for the rest of their lives. We aim to increase the children's knowledge and awareness of the environment and its changing nature, promoting a personal responsibility towards it. We will support children to acquire and develop the skills, knowledge, vocabulary and confidence to undertake enquiry based learning, problem solving and decision making.

Implementation

Geography objectives are clearly set out at the start of each lesson, including the definition of Geography itself, as well as opportunities for retrieval practice where children can reflect and build on prior learning. As children progress through the year groups, children have the opportunity to sequentially build on skills they have previously been taught. Geography equips pupils with the skills needed to be able to collect, analyse and communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing. There are opportunities for cross-curricular learning with links to all subjects within the curriculum; in PE, children have the opportunity to develop orienteering skills which supports their map reading.

Impact

The children at Disraeli will develop a sense of identity by learning about their own locality, the United Kingdom and its relationship with other countries, and identify similarities and differences between locations. They will develop a sense of responsibility for the world in which they live, so they will want to look after the Earth and its resources and think about how it can be improved and sustained. Children will acquire and develop the skills and confidence to undertake investigations, problem solving and decision making through the regular retrieval of previous learning.
