History
Intent
At Disraeli, focus on helping children understand that historical events can be interpreted in different ways, meaning that our questions can also be interpreted and answered in different ways. We aim to make pupils at Disraeli become life-long History learners who have a thirst for knowledge about the world, its past events and their local area. Our pupils will be able to place themselves in History and understand how history has, and is, shaping their life and world; they will develop an understanding of now and how this will shape the present but also the future.
Implementation
History is the driver subject in autumn and summer term, facilitating deep learning within history as well as cross curricular learning, allowing children to be fully engaged in historical learning. We place an emphasis on using a range of sources, both primary and secondary across all history units. Children approach History using enquiry-based questions which focus on themes such as:
Cause and Consequence- analysing causes and consequences
Change and Continuity- analysing change and continuity across time
Handling Evidence- using original evidence
Similarities and Differences- comparing contrasting people, events and periods
Historical Interpretations- analysis of how history is viewed looking back on events from later times
Historical Significance- considering why people, events and periods might be significant
Through these themes, children will gain knowledge and understanding of significant aspects of the history of the wider world, the history of these islands and how to engage in historical enquiry. As such, children begin to understand their place in human history and understand how the past influences their present and their future.
Lessons are sequenced to build upon prior knowledge, using retrieval to activate the previous knowledge, skills and vocabulary of previous topics and themes, as well as check on learning, to ensure clear progression of knowledge, skills and vocabulary. All lessons are taught in line with the Teaching for Learning policy, using adaptive teaching to challenge all children.
Impact
Children will have an understanding of chronological order and be able to place significant events in order of occurrence. They will possess a solid understanding of key events in history which have directly or indirectly affected the world in which they live today. By the time children leave the Disraeli school, they will be able to analyse major events that are happening in their current lives as if they were a historian, against the key bullet pointed areas above, because as soon as an event has happened, it takes its place in history. Our history curriculum prepares children for their next stage of learning, and children become critical thinkers who are resilient and independent learners.
